CNN Heroes of the Year was inspired by the broadcaster’s longstanding commitment to global community service and its coverage of the United Nations General Assembly, where the UN Secretary-General sits in the front row during UN
Highlights past honorees include Olympic ice-dance gold medalist Apolo Anton Ohno; and Javier Peña, a young man from Mexico who was orphaned at age 5 and so far has raised $1.5m for the Pan American Health Organization.
The first Hero challenge was held in 2014, followed by the second in 2016. A special Guardians of the Earth program will launch in 2019 as an additional recognition of those who make a dramatic impact on animals.
