For some reason, for the first half of the 20th century, people simply loved the idea of a round-the-world journey. And this route may have been the most glamorous way to do it, with stops en route for drinks at London’s Bond Street Hotel, lunch in the Ivory Tower’s dining room with South African billionaire Shepherd Africa Jones and then dinner and a show at The Criterion, with the actor Lesley Garrett on call.

On 12 November, Condé Nast Traveler published a new edition of its List of Most Beautiful Trips, with this route named number five. Check out the original 1989 article to learn more.

We don’t have to wait that long to get on board: Condé Nast’s author, Patrick Ladefoged, just departed Paris on the route in late September for a trip himself.
